😏 Why "only" is a 4 letter word!

Published almost 2 years ago • 2 min read

Hey, heeeeey!

Ok, yeah. "Only" does indeed only have 4 letters, but in this sense, I mean a four-letter-word as in a no-no word.

And here's why.

Not to get too woo-woo on you, because that's not really my style. (If you are into woo-woo, do you boo! We cool!!)

But a good portion of how you manage your money is mindset. Your thoughts and emotions surrounding it.

Don't believe me? I'll prove it to you.

You know how when something great happens, like you get a raise, you then "treat-yo-self" because "I deserve it!"?

Or when you are bored...or just like, don't want to face the Everest of dirty clothes just waiting for you to get around to it, you'll mindlessly scroll around on Amazon or Target, looking for all the things you need.

And this is the one I hear ALL.THE.TIME. " It's ONLY(!) $7!"

See what I did there? I justified the purchase by qualifying it with "only". I made that $7 insignificant by buddying it up with "only".

I think we would all agree no matter what your income looks like that $5K is not a small amount of money.

You know what $5K looks like over a year? $13.70.

So, Bestie, next time you are out. I want you to pay attention to how many times, you mentally say to yourself, "Oh look it's ____, and it's ONLY $X!"

I did this little exercise over the course of about 2 weeks and every time I caught myself saying "only" I had to put the thing down and walk away and I found myself using it ALOT more than I realized.

When it comes to being intentional with your money, every cent matters. Every one!

Does that mean you can't have personal spending money? Nope!

That means intention, not emotion should be making our spending decisions.

Is this difficult? You betcha!

But making yourself aware of this mindset is gonna change the way you start thinking about money and the way you interact with it.

SURVEY TIME: Do you find yourself using "only" alot in terms of money? Are you in the "only" club with me 😝 or have you conquered this money mindset roadblock?

Hey, heeeeeeey! A guardrail, by definition, is a rail that prevents people from falling off or being hit by something. Well, just like we have those on steep curves in the road, we also need to build those into our budgets. So what does a guardrail in your budget look like? It is built from a few different parts. It's your emergency fund guarding your against surprise financial disasters. It's sinking funds, helping you pre-plan for irregular expenses. And lastly, it's the way you manage your...

Hey, heeeeeeey! While staying on budget is super important, staying motivated can be a challenge. #amiright So let's talk about a few ways you can keep your motivation up to stay the course and crush your financial goals. #1- Don't forget to include a little fun money. Just like a diet, if you don't give yourself a little room for something you enjoy, it's going to be that much harder to stick with it, If I was on a new diet that told me I'd never be able to have cheesecake again-- well, to...
